Check out the F/A-18F Super Hornet on final for a carrier landing. Interesting configuration with four external and one center-line fuel tanks. I wonder if they fly missions in that config or if it is just a ferry flight.

Nope, not a ferry flight, Super Hornets are pulling tanker duty now in the fleet, which must be boring for a fighter guy/gal to have to do. One more reason they shoulda kept Tomcats if you ask me! :) If you notice, the center tank has a prop (kinda like what's on the jamming pods EA-6Bs carry) for powering the hose/drogue in and out of the tank. Dunno if it's the exact pod S-3s carry/carried, but it looks to be the same idea at least. Sorry to not comment sooner, I haven't changed my wallpaper in a while but your site's always the 1st one I go to when I do! Thanks again for the great work!

ReplyDeleteActually, turns out being the tanker has some benefits...when nothing is going on, they play tag with the clouds, do loops, and generally burn gas.
