A-10C Thunderbolt II Attack Aircraft In Formation 1680 x 1050 Widescreen Wallpaper

Here's a great formation photo of two A-10C Thunderbolt II aircraft in formation.

These aircraft perform the CAS role and I've found a good video to show you what a day in the life of an A-10 pilot is like.

Enjoy and next time you see an A-10 pilot, tell them "Thanks!"

A-10s In Formation 1680 x 1050 Widescreen Desktop Wallpaper

Funny thing about the A-10, back in the day (late 1980's) everyone was saying "The A-10 is going to be retired". Well, here it is 2009 and it's still flying.

Anyone remember when they made a version of the F-16 called the A-16? Yeah, they had a bunch of those testing at Nellis during the 80's. It would be neat if I could find a picture of those I could use for a wallpaper.

The A-16's were camo green and quite interesting. They were supposed to be replace the A-10. Not sure what happened but they never worked out.

The Hog 1680 x 1050 Widescreen Wallpaper

One of the most distinctive faces in military aviation. The A-10 Insurgent Killer stands alone as one of the most loved and hated aircraft in the world.

A-10 Formation Flight Over Alaska 1680 x 1050 Widescreen Wallpaper

Nice shot here of two A-10 Thunderbolts in formation of a range in Alaska. The AK on the tails represents Eielson AFB, Alaska.

It's interesting that the A-10 would get stationed there, but I'm sure there's a reason.

A-10 Rolling In 1680 x 1050 Widescreen Wallpaper

This shot is like many of the murals I've seen on squadron walls. Here's an A-10 rolling in to a attack. It's a great shot.

A-10 at Sunset 1680 x 1050 Widescreen Wallpaper

Here's a artistic two-ship A-10 formation in the desert.

I started with a rather dreary original photo and cropped it. I then adjusted levels and slightly desaturated the photo. I then applied an orange filter and adjusted the hue. Once I was happy with the color I boosted the color saturation. To finish, I applied lens flare and lighting effects.

I've got this one on my widescreen desktop and love it.

A-10s In Formation 1680 x 1050 Widescreen Wallpaper

At times I really enjoy a subdued color on my widescreen monitor. I used that effect with four A-10s flying in close formation. I think it turned out great. What do you think?

A-10 Gear Up Landing 1680 x 1050 Widescreen Wallpaper

Here's a rare picture of an A-10 after an emergency gear up landing at Edwards AFB. I wonder what the pilot was thinking just before landing. Brave!

Overall, it looks like the A-10 didn't take too much damage and should still be flyable after some repair work.

A-10 Thunderbolt II Aerial 1680 x 1050 Widescreen Wallpaper

Nice aerial shot of the A-10 Tank Killer (TM). I bet this plane is fun to fly even it is SLOW...

Check out this crazy low pass by an A-10! He must have passed within 25 feet of the camerman.

An A-10 With A Flare For The Dramatic 1680 x 1050 Widescren Wallpaper

Excellent shot of an A-10 pulling a high-g turn and popping flares. For those of you that don't know, flares are used as a counter-measure against infrared seeking missiles.

Made it home safely from San Francisco. I flew a Continental 737-300 model to Houston and then a 757-200 to Tampa, Florida. The 757 was partially loaded and we took off like a fighter jet from Houston. Best airliner takeoff to date.

Here's an excellent shot of the A-10 Tank Killer (tm) taking off. I love the nose art.

Enjoy!

A-10 Thunderbolt II Refueling 1680 x 1050 Widescreen Wallpaper

If you know anything about the A-10, you know it is a heck of a bomb truck but it's as slow as your Grandma's Dodge K car. Here you see the A-10 catching a drink from a tanker and that definitely had to be one full flap slow flying tanker.

That withstanding, it's still a rock'in wallpaper! Enjoy.

The Top Gun poll is over and Maverick personality took first place. Congrats to all you Mavs out there. I too voted as a Maverick so I'm in good company.

To show how old I am, I remember seeing Top Gun when it first came out while I was in USAF tech school in Denver, Colorado. Speaking of which, Feb 4th is always a day to remember for me. It was on Feb 4th, 1986 that I joined the USAF. Will never forget that day.

Now, as for the Patriots, that just sucks. On my flight to San Fran, I had a lay-over in Houston, TX. I caught a little of the 3rd and 4th quarters and was hoping the Patriots would finish off the Giants. Needless to say, on the flight the pilots broke in and told us that the Giants had won. There was little response and a lot of unhappy people (myself included). Congrats to you Giant fans. You guys suck...

A-10 Thunderbolt II 1680 x 1050 Widescreen Wallpaper

Here's a tight shot of an A-10 performing a show pass. It's not a sexy plane but it sure packs a punch. It's often been said it was a plane built around a gun (in this case a 30 MM gun).

Enjoy!

Heritage Flight New York City A-10 F-15C F-16C and P-51D 1680 x 1050 Widescreen Wallpaper

Excellent shot of a four-ship Heritage flight over New York city. The P-51 is still a marvel but it is amazing to see how far aircraft design has progressed in 40 years.

Enjoy!

A-10 Thunderbolt II 1680 x 1050 Widescreen Wallpaper

During the Nellis 2007 airshow, the A-10 performed and I got a few great shots. Although everything the A-10 is low speed, here is a "low" speed pass with gear extended.

They said that because of the low speed and high turn radius, two A-10s can keep gun fire on a target area every 10-15 seconds.

Enjoy!

A-10 Thunderbolt II 1680 x 1050 Widescreen Wallpaper

Here's a shot of one of my favorite planes. the engines are fixed high on the fuselage which is useful when the A-10 needs to land on forward air bases. Also the risk of FOD (Foreign Object Damage), caused by sand and stones, is reduced. This unusual engine setting gave the A-10 his "Warthog" nickname.

I added some contrast and color adjustments.

A-10 Thunderbolt II Formation 1680 x 1050 Widescreen Wallpaper

This plane was born to kill tanks. If you've ever seen a 30mm round, it's about 18 inches long and packs a high explosive punch.

Here's a great two-ship formation shot. Enjoy!

P-51D F-16C F-15C and A-10 Four Ship Formation Over New York 1680 x 1050 Widescreen Wallpaper

Rare shot of a four-ship line abreast formation of the finest US aircraft. The aircraft and the New York city backdrop make for a spectacular wallpaper.

This shot required some work. The exposure and color hue were off. After making corrections, I added some saturation and sharpened it.

A-10 Warthog 1680 x 1050 Widescreen Wallpaper

A-10 Warthog Widescreen Wallpaper.

Ugly, slow, but dreaded, the A-10 is one bad looking plane. It also sports a kick-ass GAU-8 30 MM cannon. This shot includes my favorite nose art on the plane.

I cropped it slightly, adjust the levels down a notch and boosted the contrast. Add a little saturation and sharpening and you get an excellent wallpaper.
